2010 - Granite City & Portland Open
Scotland’s richest darts tournament The Granite City Open was held in Aberdeen with 7 Orkney darts players making the journey south to compete. For the most successful the event now carries entry places for the qualifying stages of the BDO World Championship and the tournament saw all the Orcadian darts players succeed in making it to the second round.
It was Keith Chalmers of the Stromness Legion however that had the amazing achievement of making the last 16 of the event out of an entry of just under 500. This enabled Keith to achieve a World Ranking on the Red Dragon World Rankings.
From the Scotland BDO Inter Counties system Keith defeated two Grampian county players and an Angus county player. His charge was only halted when he came up against Brian “Pecker” Woods who was the 2008 Lakeside World Championship Semi Finalist and Grand Slam of Darts regular. Talking of Keith’s exceptional run to the last 16 “Pecker” Woods stated “Keith was unlucky in the last 16 but didn’t play as well as he had done all day and was lucky to get nil !”
Tournament co-director Debbie Gordon said “I’d like to welcome all Orkney players to Aberdeen again and well done to Keith for his exceptional achievement and I hope to see you all again in 2011 !
The The Portland Open took place in Inverness which is Scotland’s 2nd richest event outside the central belt. Dennis Watt of the Stromness Legion won through as one of the 16 qualifiers from the main draw that gained him the right to take on one of the seeded big boys such as the PDC's Mark Webster and Robert Thornton. However it was PDC and Lakeside World Championship Runner Up, Australia’s Simon Whitlock that ran away with the final stages of the tournament and picked up the winners trophy and cheque.
