Orkney Darts Classic 2011 - Sat 20th Aug

  In an exceptional performance Jim McDill won three legs against the PDC World Champion, Adrian Lewis in the 1st Round of the Orkney Darts Classic. Keith Chalmers put in a high scoring display against two time World Championship finalist but The Wizard pulled away for a 5 -1 victory after being tied at 1 - 1.

First round: Kevin Gray v Andy Fordham – Andy retired; Jim McDill 3, Adrian Lewis 5; Mike Bain 0, Robert Thornton 5; Stevie Linklater 3, Co Stompe 5; Jim Flett 0, Mark Webster 5; Brian Moar 1, John Henderson 5; Ivan Leslie 2, Aaron Monk 5; Keith Chalmers 1, Simon Whitlock 5.

Quarter-finals: Kevin Gray 0, Adrian Lewis 5; Robert Thornton 5, Co Stompe 2; Mark Webster 5, John Henderson 2; Aaron Monk 0, Simon Whitlock 5. Semi-finals: Adrian Lewis 5, Robert Thornton 3; Mark Webster 2, Simon Whitlock 5.

Final: Adrian Lewis 2, Simon Whitlock 6.


Granite City Open 2011

Over a dozen Orcadian darts players travelled south to compete in Scotland's richest darts tournament , The Granite City Open in Aberdeen.

  A field of 500 men assembled with Dennis Watt, of the Stromness Legion getting in the prize money by progressing to the last 32, along with 4 PDC players, 5 Scottish internationals and a former BDO World Champion.

  Dennis eventually lost to Scottish International and former Lakeside World Championship qualifier. Alex Lister, 4-1. This did however enable Dennis Watt to achieve a Red Dragon World Ranking position.

  Losing to International players was a pattern that was repeated throughout the day with Keith Chalmers unable to repeat his last 16 position this year being defeated by Scottish International and World Cup Player Stewart Rattray in Round 2.  Meanwhile Kevin Gray was defeated by Scottish International and Lakeside World Championship qualifier, Alan Soutar, 4 - 3, in Round three.

  In the Ladies singles nearly 150 entered with Cath Symonds losing out 4 - 1 to Russian International Irina Armstrong. Linda Harcus lost to a Scottish Youth International. Ladies World Champion Trina Gullivar went on to win the Ladies Open, defeating Irina 5 - 3 in the final.

  In the Men's Pairs Lennie Clouston & Kenny Gunn made it to the last 64 with a victory over Aberdeen pairing of G Watson & W Greig.

 

2010/11 WMDA Men's League Title - Winners STENNESS

Congratulations to the Stenness on being victorious in the Mens League for the first time in over a decade. Despite losing twice to the Stromness Legion they still were strong enough in depth to come through and win with a better games difference. Well done to Stewart Moar for assembling a team out of The Standing Stones Hotel again after so many years.

2011 - Tennents Kirkwall Open - Sat 12th March


  Robbie Stanger beat Dennis Watt from Stromness Legion 5-2 in the final of the Tennent's Kirkwall Open, winning the title and the £500.
  Dennis received £200 and on his way to the Final defeated Shetlands Neal Redfern 3-2 in the Last 16 and then beat defending champion Stevie Linklater 3-2 in the Last 8.
  Keith Chalmers also from Stromness Legion made the Semi - Finals to earn £ 50 and he also had the Highest Finish of the day with 160. A total of  89 Players from Orkney, Shetland and Caithness took part.

2011 - WMDA Mens League Doubles - Fri 25th Feb

  18 pairs entered the League Doubles held in The Stenness Hotel. There were some strong pairings vying for the title and it was Keith Chalmers/Dennis Watt who emerged victorious to retain their title defeating Kenny Gunn/Jim McDill 4 - 1 in a very high standard final with 12 dart leg from the losing finalists. No other pairing has successfully defended this trophy in its 37 year history however Keith and Dennis have now held the trophy since 2008. 

 

2010 - WMDA Mens League Singles - Fri 3rd Dec

  23 players entered the League singles in the Noust.
Davie Cooper of Stenness came through a strong field to emerge victorious in the Final defeating Erland Ritch of the Golf Club. Davie has now won both League Singles events in Orkney (KDDL and WMDA Singles) Mal Reid of the Merkister and Keith Chalmers were the losing semi-finalists.

2010 - Granite City & Portland Open 

   Scotland’s richest darts tournament The Granite City Open was held in Aberdeen with 7 Orkney darts players making the journey south to compete. For the most successful the event now carries entry places for the qualifying stages of the BDO World Championship and the tournament saw all the Orcadian darts players succeed in making it to the second round.
   It was Keith Chalmers of the Stromness Legion however that had the amazing achievement of making the last 16 of the event out of an entry of just under 500. This enabled Keith to achieve a World Ranking on the Red Dragon World Rankings.
   From the Scotland BDO Inter Counties system Keith defeated two Grampian county players and an Angus county player. His charge was only halted when he came up against Brian “Pecker” Woods who was the 2008 Lakeside World Championship Semi Finalist and Grand Slam of Darts regular. Talking of Keith’s exceptional run to the last 16 “Pecker” Woods stated “Keith was unlucky in the last 16 but didn’t play as well as he had done all day and was lucky to get nil !”
  Tournament co-director Debbie Gordon said “I’d like to welcome all Orkney players to Aberdeen again and well done to Keith for his exceptional achievement and I hope to see you all again in 2011 !
 

  The Portland Open took place in Inverness which is Scotland’s 2nd richest event outside the central belt. Dennis Watt of the Stromness Legion won through as one of the 16 qualifiers from the main draw that gained him the right to take on one of the seeded big boys such as the PDC's Mark Webster and Robert Thornton. However it was PDC and Lakeside World Championship Runner Up, Australia’s Simon Whitlock that ran away with the final stages of the tournament and picked up the winners trophy and cheque.

Jim McDill of the Stromness Legion won the County Championship singles in a very sharp, top notch display. Dennis Watt & Keith Chalmers also of the Stromness Legion won the County Doubles Championship after being 2 -1 down. Dennis Watt hit Double Top with his last dart to win the deciding leg and the title.
