Parish Cup Final Holm v Firth
09 April 2018

The Commodore was the venue on Saturday night for this years Orkney Darts Association Parish Cup Final between four-time winners Holm and final debutants Firth.  Only three teams had previously won the trophy, and Firth had dispatched the two other winners Sandwick and Westray en route to the final so were in a determined mood, although Holm were by far and away the favourites with experience being a huge factor in these games.

Holm won the toss and Leigh Shearer and Billy Ward saw off the Moar brothers 2-1, courtesy of  a 124 finish on the bull from Billy to seal it to put Holm one up.  Firth soon levelled the match with Robbie Stanger and Graham Flett playing some solid darts to see off the challenge of Freddie Tait and Sean Stanger.  Missed opportunities then allowed Firth to go 2-1 up with Chris Seator and Eric Walls taking out Bruce Moar and Brian Stevenson (Tone).

The singles kicked off in scrappy style, with Brian putting Firth 3-1 ahead against Holm skipper Bruce.  Suddenly Firth found high gear and went on the rampage, with Eric, Robbie and Chris all winning their games 2-0 against Tone, Freddie and Sean.  Leigh took the first leg against Firth captain Stevie but some really good darts saw Firth go 7-1 up, before Billy played outstanding against Gary Aim, who himself played very well, to make the half time score Holm 2 Firth 7.

The break saw a beautiful supper supplied by the host venue, which was very welcome by all players.  It was great to see the teams at this point all mingling and chatting at the dinner tables, it really summed up the ethos of the competition.  Everyone being completely determined to win but at the same time there is always a fun and respectful attitude towards the opponents.

Holm needed to respond quickly, and respond they did, winning all three second half doubles 2-0.  With the score now 7-5 to Firth but momentum with Holm it was far from clear where the cup was destined to end up.

In the game of the night, Bruce Moar took on Erlend Pirie, who hadn't been involved in the match up to this point, and both players traded high scores throughout the three legs in an enthralling match-up.  It was Erlend who ultimately emerged victorious and gave Firth a much needed boost by stopping the rot.  Tone hit back immediately for Holm, getting the better of Eric to make the score 8-6 to Firth.

Brian then stepped up to the oche for Firth and, for about the first time in this years cup run, showed what darts he is capable of, overpowering Leigh to put Firth on the verge of victory.  Chris Seator then took on Billy Ward, and despite both players missing darts at double, it was Chris who nailed double 10 to win 2-0 but more importantly ensure the Parish Cup was on it's way to the Pomona.  Once the furore had settled down, the last two singles were played out and Holm won both with Freddie beating Robbie and Sean getting the better of Stevie.

Bruce Moar in his role as President of the Orkney Darts Association then took on the task of presenting the cup to Stevie, but not before he outlined that the team that seemed the more determined to win, and were more of a vocal unit had been the one to come out on top.  Stevie gratefully accepted the cup on behalf of Firth Parish and thanked the opponents for a hard fought game before thanking his boys for the commitment and effort they've made to improving over the last few years.  The cup then headed to it's new home behind the bar in the Pomona whilst the celebrations ran well into the early hours in the bonny Firth countryside.
