 ORKNEY MILK

The Orkney Creamery, somewhat unusually these days, continues to operate its own fleet of vans distributing fresh milk and cream around the islands.  With all routes starting from the dairy, we deliver south over the Churchill barriers to Burwick, where on a clear day the mountains of the Scottish mainland can look very close indeed, east past Kirkwall airport through Tankerness and Deerness, and west through Orphir and Stenness to Orkney’s second town, Stromness (we deliver daily the NorthLink ferry ‘MV Hamnavoe’ which takes its name form the town itself – or rather from the name of its Norse forebear – Hamnavoe (Safe Harbour or Haven Bay).  We go north and west too, around the parishes of Firth, Rendall, Evie, Birsay, Harray and Sandwick as well as delivering to the harbour in Kirkwall where the fleet of smaller inter-island ferries make their way back and forward between Orkney’s outer islands and the mainland.  So our milk is delivered fresh into the local stores ont eh islands of Westray, Rousay, Shapinsay, Sanday…(and so on)

To order Orkney Milk CLICK HERE or telephone our dairy office at 01856 872542.

If you are a visitor to Orkney look out for our product in the fridges of the stores around the island…or ask your host whether your B&B, hotel or guesthouse is using Orkney milk (you may find that most local folk still call it simply ‘Crantit’ milk, after the name of our farm).

We believe that the goodness in our products is simply a reflection of the goodness of our island environment.  In practical terms, the long hours of daylight, combined with fine alluvial soil, fanned by salt laden winds, make for ideal summer pasture for the islands’ dairy herd.  Growing great grass is one thing that Orkney farmers do very well!  And good grass, combined with excellent stockmanship makes for beautiful fresh milk….. and that’s where we come in.

Pasteurising, processing and packaging – keeping things simple but adding a little of the magic of food science along the way – we produce what we believe to be the very best fresh and frozen dairy products.

And with the fourth generation now in place at Crantit, we plan to keep doing what we do for many years to come.

Beyond the dairy, Orkney has so much to offer both the casual leisure visitor and the committed food fanatic.  For our part we are lucky to enjoy the best of Orkney beef, lamb and seafood, whiskies and beer, cheeses, breads and biscuits, confectionery and preserves – there’s too much to tell you about in this site but if you are interested in learning more about Orkney Food and Drink click here.
