Busy day at the bird feeders

The frosty weather has brought a constant flitting of birds to the feeders outside our kitchen window. To our delight, the usual blue tits, great tits and coal tits have been joined by small groups of long-tailed tits this week — a first for our garden. Our favourite robins, chaffinches, house and hedge sparrows and blackbirds are also frequent visitors, along with the occasional woodpecker. The blackbirds are the bully-boys, pushing aside the smaller birds to get a long peck at the hanging fat cakes. Unfortunately (for them), they lack the agility of the tits who can cling to the wire cage in any position to reach the smallest amount of suet remaining. When the blackbirds attempt the same feat, they lose their balance and fall off the feeder!
