Reactions - Neath Town

What the residents of Neath have to say:

Editorial Note - Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council propose to name the South access road to Neath: Nelson Mandela Way. On this page we post the comments from the residents of Neath as received on the town's discussion website - The Neath Ferret.

The lastest posts appear at the top of the page

The comment was left by Phil J with the subject  and says The naming of the Neath South Access Road as Nelson Mandela Way is sure to back fire on the council with all the graffiti artists that are around.  It will be a great expense to the council in constantly removing it.
As others have forecast, Neath and its council will be a laughing stock through out the UK - thanks to the Only Fools and Horses connection -and the added humour of graffiti artistes, whom I know personally.

In full agreement with Frank Little on this one.
Seeing that the underpass section of this road where the A465 passes overhead at Saltings Roundabout is covered in graffiti some of which is quite artistic it is surely only a matter of time before a yellow Reliant appears.
Should make for a good laugh on Google at the expense of Neath.

The comment was left by H Thomas with the subject  and says What the heck has Neath got to do with Mandela? Unless the people need a leader like him to free them from the people presently ruling the borough. Perhaps the people are oppressed and this is a hint to get their act together and overthrow those who treat them with such inhumanity.

The comment was left by G Garbo with the subject  and says Nelson Mandela could still be honoured by the alienated Councillors of NPT CBC if they called the road - Freedom Way - after all it is the main route out of Neath.

The comment was left by HThomas with the subject  and says This Council is a joke. Why don't they ask the people of Neath what a road should be called. The Council is supposed to be a democratic Institution. They do not have a clue what the people of Neath think and it seems like they do not care either.

The comment was left by Stan with the subject  and says Now the precedent has been set I don't see why we can't go a bit further and name a few more bits of our town after buddies of our MP. I'm thinking about other former terrorists who have turned to the way of the ballot box rather than the bomb and the bullet. Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness are surely worthy of a building named after them at the very least. Do the Council have a Suggestion Box where I can float this idea and more important, if they take up my idea, will I get a prize?

If people think this idea is a bit insensitive I'd be happy to see something named after Bernie Ecclestone or Lewis Hamilton.

The comment was left by Frank Little with the subject New name for the south access road and says I see from council minutes that (unless there have been any objections and the council takes note of them) that the section of A474 linking with Neath town centre is to be named "Nelson Mandela Way".

I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, it commemorates one of the great international figures of the twentieth century; on the other, it may remind visitors of "Nelson Mandela House" in the BBC's "Only Fools and Horses".
