The Place
The Rainforest's high level of rainfall and diverse topography and it's meandering rivers and abundance of life helps the Amazon to create large amounts of carbon. This fact of high levels of carbon is key to maintaining both local and global climates.
The Species
The Amazon is host to nearly 40,000 seperate species of plants. More amazingly the Amazon contains the Worlds richest diversity of animals, which includes: birds, fresh water fish and rare butterflies.
It is also a refuge for jaguars, harpy eagles and even pink dolphins. Many of it's tree species are home to the two-toed sloths found in the southern region and pygmy marmosets, saddleback and emperor tamarins and goeldl's monkeys.
The People
350 indigenous and ethnic groups have lived in the Amazon for thousands of years. Using their natural environment for such things as: agriculture, clothing and essential medicines.
Many live unfortunately in large urban centres. But nearly all residents remain solely on the Amazons ecosystem for important services for: food, shelter and livelihoods.
