Johnny Whitfield

This website was created for the children who stayed within the walls of the Martha Frew Home, Keavil House, Crossford, Fife.

The words that Johnny Whitfield and others use have often a ring of similarity and reading his  experieinces may bring back some memories stored.

The Public Library at Dunfermline has Council Records with much reference to the building and aspirations of the MFH. An initial request to them to create a MFH Special Collection was met with some positive response.

Once the information has been gathered, (memories, photgraphs and press cuttings etc needed) and a lot of official stuff not 'suppressed' as at present,  should all be available when enough doors are rattled and enough folk ask questions.

So much suppression goes on and spills into an individual's life when they have been placed in care. There is a certain strength needed to face what was a lack lustre, weak and intimidating management. There were a few inspired moments of humanity between the children themselves and just a few benign members of staff and those who meant well.

A certain resolution is needed also to face the facts of how the children were placed in the Martha Frew Home with trust and to be cared for, often facing yet another set of difficulties they had no hand in and no one to turn to.

Many children had been in the home most of their lives, others for short stays with the prospect of returning there.
