KNC Volunteers Save Summer Beds
15 June 2016

KNC has had to organise volunteer groups to ensure that Nairn keeps all its floral displays this summer. Cuts to Highland Council's budget has meant that the local gardening team will no longer be maintaining all the usual bedding sites. KNC spent the Spring in discussion with the Council, Michael Green on behalf of the Ward Councillors and Nairn 's two Community Councils to find ways to keep as much colour in the town as possible.

An agreement was eventually reached and KNC approached local volunteers and businesses to see if they could step in where the Council was giving up.  The Community took up the challenge:

Members of Nairn Old Parish Church, supervised by Jim Docherty, agreed to look after the three raised brick beds opposite the church and pupils from Millbank Primary helped them plant the beds up.

Yvonne Cotter, Nairn Museum's Manager, with the Museum's volunteers and Friends wil tend to the beds on either side of the entrance and Rosebank Primary pupils helped KNC volunteers to plant those beds.

James Grigg, who has taken over the kiosk at the Putting Green has adopted the two beds in Marine Road on either side of his new kitchen. KNC volunteers helped him put in the bedding there.

Over 1,000 plug plants were planted and the three sites are now full of colour. More help has come from River Community Council who have donated money to help with the maintenance of the Harbour Street beds and troughs, Nairn Rotary Group & Sainsbury's are keeping the rose beds at Achareidh & Balmakeith weed free and Donald Green has adopted the bed in St. Ninian's Road and put in a mix of perennials and summer bedding from his nursery.
