Collecting

If you are interested in social history, or a particular subject (e.g. trains, cats, cricket or space exploration), then you may be surprised to learn that philately could be just up your street.  For over a hundred years countries have commemorated all sorts of events and activities with stamps.  Collecting a country and tracing with envelopes, stamps, postcards etc. the many events that have shaped its diversity, economy and culture can be a very rewarding pastime.  Better still it is something you can do in your home and at relatively low cost.

Some people collect stamps of a theme such as birds, aircraft, history or a particular individual like Ghandi.  Others find postmarks intriguing and collect cancellations from all the post offices on a Caribbean island or seek out postmark errors.  Some collect stamp either mint or used against a standard list, such as the relevant Stanley Gibbons Catalogue, while others specialise in errors in colour or printing.

The Guildford Stamp Club meets monthly to share knowledge, watch interesting presentations and encourage one another.  You don't need to be an expert or even to have a collection...just being interested is enough.  You will be made very welcome if you come along to "take a look".
