Foxlease 1939 - 1945 - The War Years
The years of war saw the house responding to the needs of Guides in a different way.
First came the necessity of blacking out the 116 windows - not to mention a few skylights. Next came some unusual visitors; fifty-six schoolboys, evacuees from Portsmouth who were to stay in the house for a fortnight. The house charmed its new inmates and the very first postcard home drew the picture "We are in a palace kept by Guides. We have a bed and a dressing table each, so don't you worry Mum".
It was a good fortnight, if a busy one, with a strenuous programme for the Guider in Charge and her staff to keep going, but everything ran smoothly and the boys enjoyed their stay.
