At a CCRC meeting last night it was decided by unanimous vote that we would follow the Avoch method of selecting teams as spelled out below. Many many thanks to Laura Lambert for attending our meeting, giving us the benefit of her wisdom and experience,  and for patiently going through all kinds of permutations with us while we explored the best way for our club.

At a REGATTA PLANNING EGM to be held on  Wednesday 3rd October

(and annually thereafter) the club will vote for a TEAM CAPTAIN IN EACH CATEGORY

and an overall  CLUB CAPTAIN  - this person will have final say in all Regatta Matters.

The EGM shall also decide which regattas in the following season we will enter.

Some will be ones that we have potential to win in, so the captain would pitch their best team. Some we will have less hope of winning if the “big guys” usually enter (eg Eastern)

so at these regattas we would probably choose to enter a less strong team,

but all good for experience and to build confidence and skills.

Thereafter, until the season starts again, each Team Captain is responsible for finding any rower who is eligible in their category and watching them row to assess ability. For each regatta they will put a general and widely spread call out for rowers to contact them if they want to be considered,  in whichever way they prefer, but by a certain date. They will then select teams for all relevant races, based on who is available on that day, together with all other considerations.  They will make sure they also have a stand-by selected in each race. The captain does not have to themselves cox or row in that category necessarily, but they can if they are eligible.

The captains will then take their selection to the CLUB CAPTAIN who will make sure that the spread of competitors is even and fairly selected. The CC will also help and support the captains if there are any contentious situations.  Sometimes a meeting between CAPTAINS  and chaired by CLUB CAPTAIN  will be necessary to go through groups, as there will be some crossover of people in categories.  If any changes are requested by the CC these must be actioned, and the CLUB CAPTAIN’S decisions are final and non-negotiable.

Any concerns can and should be taken up with the CLUB CAPTAIN, but rowers should also understand that it’s often difficult to select, or to please everyone, and to try and not take things personally.

All captains will follow a code of conduct which is:

To make sure that everyone who wishes to, gets to row competitively, in equal share, during the season.

To not be partisan or have  favourites.

To encourage people to row with different people, personnel issues notwithstanding.

To partake in a “train the trainer” course where available, so that all the club’s training becomes more uniform.

To be diplomatic and also to have a thick skin.

To follow the ethos of the club which is that we are welcoming and inclusive.

To remember to emphasise that we always row for the whole of CCRC , not just our team.

Members who are interested in being either a Team Captain or this year’s Club Captain should indicate their interest by 20th SEPTEMBER  to our chair CorrieJeffrey by email :
