2010 Ullswater, The Lake District

A Ditty - by Jim Duffy

The gang assembled again this year on the banks of Ullswater,
Mostly unfit, some unwell, we were like lambs to the slaughter.
But after a meal and a few beers at the Pooley Bridge Inn
And a good night’s sleep we were ready to begin.
With the exception of Roy who had an infection in his chest,
So he stayed behind in bed – Pat thought it was best.

The morning walk was lovely though the wind was a brute,
Jim didn’t take part, he stayed behind with his foot.
Lunch at the White Lion in Patterdale had us all licking our lips,
Bob had a burger and everyone helped themselves to his chips.
Even Roy turned up but he was looking very pale,
But this didn’t stop the rest of us enjoying the excellent ale.

The stint after lunch took us alongside the lake,
And we stopped once or twice for a banana or a cake.
But no tea or coffee because no one had brought the creamer,
Heather sat down at one point to wave at the steamer.
An hour or so later we reached the finish,
Just before our powers started to diminish.

At the post-walk dinner Roy was absent once again,
It looked highly suspicious because so was Jenn.
But Jenny was unwell after a dodgy meal the evening before, I guess
Whilst Roy was having too much fun with his trouser press.
Roy had written a speech which has now become the tradition,
Which Jim delivered with one or two additions.

It was an excellent weekend, everything was super,
Thanks to the organisation of Sian and Derek Cooper.
They got everything just right – even the weather,
And after a 4 year absence it was great to see Graham and Heather.
Whoever organises next year will have a hell of a job, son,
I understand it’s Dave. Who Tookey?. No, Hobson!
