Learning harmonies from a CD

by Sarah - 00:18 on 18 July 2010

Sounds easy, doesn't it, you just put the CD in the car player, listen a few times and job done!  Sad to say, for most of us learning a harmony part is a bit more tricky.  I've just been giving out CDs for Way Through the Woods, and adding midi files to this website, so perhaps now is as good a time as any to talk about this.  Here's how it works for me:   I listen to a line, sometimes just a phrase, turn off the sound and try to repeat what I think I've learned. Then i listen again and realise that it is not quite correct!  I repeat this process until I know the whole verse.  Now comes the fun - can you sing your part against one of the other harmonies, or against the tune?  If you can do that, then you probably know it pretty well.  Some tunes are much harder to learn than others, but don't worry, if you just keep at it, eventually it WILL find its way into your head, and then you'll wonder why you ever had a problem!

Good luck....
