Primary Schools Receive Sports Facility Funding Boost

Congratulations to Long Marston Primary School for receiving £29,700 to create a new sport facility!

£18m of National Lottery funding has this week been awarded to primary schools across England to help more children get active. The investment from Sport Englands Primary Spaces Facilities Fund will enable 601 schools nationally, and 7 schools in North Yorkshire, to improve their outdoor facilities and create spaces that will inspire and encourage pupils to take part in play

Many of the schools that will benefit from the grants of up to £30,000 have very little outside space that is suitable for their pupils to play on. This funding will allow them to install colourful features like bouldering walls, activity tracks and ball hoops. These facilities will allow the schools to not only run better P.E. lessons but also increase activities at break-times and open up their playgrounds to the community.

Nick Bitel, Sport England Chair, said: “Having the right space to play sport and be physically active as a child is vitally important. We are delighted to be investing into these schools to improve the areas that will give children the space to start enjoying PE and sport.”

Sebastian Coe, CH KBE, the Prime Minister’s Olympic and Paralympic Legacy Ambassador, added: “A positive first experience of PE and sport at primary school is crucial to encouraging young people to be active throughout their lives, but for those schools with little or no outside space this can be extremely challenging to deliver.

“This funding will provide better outdoor multi-activity play areas at schools across the country that can be used both within the curriculum and outside school hours by local communities. I am convinced this will boost the opportunities for young people to be physically active.

David Watson, Chief Executive of North Yorkshire Sport Ltd said “We are absolutely delighted that seven Primary Schools in North Yorkshire will be benefiting from this fantastic investment. These new facilities, coupled with the opportunities that programmes such as the School Games and the Primary Sport Premium provide, should ensure that young people across North Yorkshire get the best possible start on what we hope will be a journey to life-long participation in sport and physical activity. We look forward to working with these and other schools in North Yorkshire over the coming years.”
