The Ness Cairn…..
Some might remember that I started to build a cairn as a memory of the dig at the Ness of Brodgar, using stones picked up on walks in various parts of Orkney…

I’ve added a few more, and the aim now is to cover the EOASSK first, and build from there…….
I’m particularly pleased to have found a stone on the shore by the Dam O’Hoxa which has tiny bits of fossil fish-scale in it…

“Welcome to your March enews
Thank you for your incredible support for our Norway For Whales campaign over the past year. Together, we’ve sparked a powerful wave of change, with more Norwegians than ever questioning whether whaling has a place in the modern world. But while support for killing whales is dwindling, there’s more to do.
Norwegian whalers will be permitted to slaughter up to 1,406 minke whales this year using explosive harpoons - a heartbreaking 21% increase from last year’s quota. Shockingly, 301 of the 415 whales they killed last year were female, and of those individuals, 170 were pregnant.
We are more determined than ever to end this barbaric industry.
So our Norway For Whales campaign is entering a new, bolder phase - one that challenges the status quo and makes change unavoidable. We want you to be part of it. Our stop whaling campaigner Lottie is here to share details of our upcoming mission and how you can support it.

Before you read on for more on why this cruel industry must end - and to catch up on the latest news from the world of whales and dolphins - we want to say thank you once again for all your support.
Exploiting loopholes
If there’s a global ban on whaling and little demand for whale meat in Norway, how are Norwegian whalers continuing to kill whales for profit? Katie is here to expose the truth and share how, thanks to you, we’re ensuring these actions don’t go unnoticed.

Unnecessary suffering
Many whales suffer prolonged and agonising deaths after being shot with an explosive harpoon. Yet, one of the most influential voices in whaling, Dr. Egil Øen, continues to falsely claim the harpoons he helped design ensure an instant death. It’s time to expose the truth.

Captive breeding
Morgan was rescued from the wild but never returned. Her recent calf, Ula, died suddenly just before her third birthday in 2021. Now Morgan is pregnant again. Stay tuned for our #DontGoToTheShow campaign to ensure this generation of captive whales and dolphins is the last.

Trawling ban
Marine protected areas (MPAs) should be safe havens for whales, dolphins and all marine life living in or passing through them. Yet, destructive bottom trawling and dredging still occur in many MPAs. We’re calling on the UK government to keep trawling out of these areas.

Whales saved
Thanks to you, we’ve been supporting initiatives helping hunters transition from whaling to whale watching. We’re delighted that whalers in Barrouallie and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines have agreed to stop killing orcas and shift to whale watching.

Pee power
Whales never fail to amaze us, and today is no exception. Thanks to you, we’ve funded research revealing that whales transport nutrients - via their urine, placentas, and shed skin - over the longest known distance of any mammal!
