From Kilmartin Museum…..

“Friends of Kilmartin Museum News

 March 2025

The Museum opened for the 2025 season on 1st February this year, slightly earlier than in previous years as we were aware that visitors were keen to come at this time of year.  This proved to be popular, with families on holiday for the February break trying out the interactive exhibits in the gallery, walking through Kilmartin Glen and enjoying some delicious refreshments in the Glen Bistro.  From 1st March to 31st October, the Museum is open 10am-5pm seven days a week; and from 1st November to 23rd December and 1st to 28th February the Museum is open Wednesday-Sunday, 11am-4pm.

Special Exhibition news

Between 28th April and 3rd July we will be displaying artwork created by schools and community groups as part of the National Museums Scotland Sewing Hope Project. Jacquelyn, our dedicated Education Officer, has been busy running workshops for participants to create felt squares using different fabrics to reflect their messages of hope about climate change and the future of the planet. The felt squares will be sewn together by volunteers and displayed in the Farmer and Jolomo Special Exhibitions Galleries until July, when they will move to the National Museum in Edinburgh to be displayed alongside quilts from all over Scotland.

Later in the summer, Forgotten Fleece Tales, a Scottish touring exhibition of textile arts by Sandra Junele, will be visiting the Museum in July and August this year and will be on display in the Special Exhibitions Gallery.

Evening Talks

This year we will be offering a number of free online talks, usually once a month, on Wednesday evenings with a fantastic selection of speakers.  Our next talk is with Dr Aaron Watson on Wednesday 19th March on Investigating Rock Art in Kilmartin Glen: experiences and excavations. This talk is now fully booked, and we hope to have details confirmed very soon for speakers for the rest of the year including the architect Neil Gillespie (Reiach & Hall), who designed the new Kilmartin Museum building, archaeologist, Dr Alison Sheridan, who is a specialist in the Neolithic and Bronze Age of Britain and Ireland, and Dr James Dilley, an experimental archaeologist and craftsman. Keep an eye on your inbox or our website for further details!

We will be holding a very special Show & Tell event during the summer, where Friends will have the opportunity to go 'behind the scenes' at the Museum with Curator Dr Sharon Webb to see some of the amazing artefacts from our Collections Store and hear the stories behind them.  The date and exact format are still to be confirmed, we will let you know all the details as soon as we have them.

Guided Walks

Our very popular programme of free guided walks in Kilmartin Glen is just about to start up for the 2025 season.  Starting on 9th April and led by our amazing team of volunteer walking guides, these will take place every Wednesday at 1:20pm, until the end of October.  If you are in the area and wish to attend you can book a free place.

The Museum Shop

Our Visitor Experience team have been busy stocking the shelves of the Museum Shop with lots of interesting and quirky goodies ready for 2025.  A few highlights include delicious pickles from Fodder + Farm, fascinating books about the landscape of Kilmartin Glen, Ocelot chocolate, felt crafts, jewellery by Carla Edwards, Dryad candles, natural skincare products as well as our very popular branded buffs, bags and hats.  Pop in and browse!  The shop is open 10-5 every day.

The Glen Bistro

The Glen Bistro at Kilmartin Museum is open! Serving light lunches, home baking and coffees, opening times and days are usually Wednesdays to Sundays between 9.30am and 4pm but these may sometimes vary so please make sure to visit the Bistro’s Facebook page for the latest information or call direct on 01546 607533.

Support the Museum…..

You may remember from our last update that we were fundraising for evacuation chairs and staff training.  Thank you so much to everyone who donated, we are delighted to announce that £7000 was successfully raised and three evacuation chairs have been purchased and installed.  Staff training on using them took place in January, so we are now more confident to welcome visitors who may have mobility needs to the Museum.

As a charitable organisation, we remain reliant on donations and additional fundraising to care for our collections and to run the Education Service as well as funding other projects.

If you feel you can support us by donating towards collections care or education and learning work, please visit the support page on our website here or get in touch directly with a member of the team.

Thank you so much for choosing to support the Museum by becoming a Friend of Kilmartin Museum.  Your support means so much to us, as we know that without it many of our activities and projects could not take place.  Have a look at our Friends page on our website for details of benefits and how to join, and feel free to spread the word to anyone you know who might be interested in joining!
