Jeanne's words and  immersive images from The Ness of Brodgar dig....

“It was a bright windy day with only a bit of rain! I spent the first half day over at the wonderfully curved wall with some stone features. I am still in love with the dark recesses left after soil samples are removed, bits of colour, and the forms. Nearly impossible to use paper, I use oil and small canvas. This year, I have gessoed many canvases with a mix of dirt from the spoil heap, ochre and hematite pigment. I am working ‘over the edge, on top of the ground and inside the trenches...phew!”

I’m still working my way through ‘Wild Service’…

http://www.spanglefish.com/berniesblog/blog.asp?blogid=16815

….and reading some of the chapters is quite a task!  I persevere because there are items of interest.  In one of the ‘Architecture of Belonging’ chapters – ‘Clootie Tree’ – the author tells of how the practice of honouring trees, particularly near to  ‘Holy‘ wells, by tying rags - clooties – to them is changing as people leave material which is not bio-degradable – which you would have thought would be against the ideology of the people who go to those places and leave those things.

The author writes…

“...all sorts of clothing, from shoes to bras and the ubiquitous face mask have been found hanging by the wells.”

I’m remembering the metal T-light holders left in Bryn Celli Ddu…

Candles would eventually have rotted away or been eaten by rodents – the metal holder would eventually rust, but in the case of synthetic fibres which are now being left at sacred places……synthetic - stays.

I wonder if some folk leave plastic items too?  Even worse….

In many cultures, Society is  moving away from the old ways of living and being, and it’s heartening that some people still acknowledge and respect the importance of trees and water, but maybe they need to think a bit harder and wider about the ways in which they express that acknowledgment.
