For Folk Who Like Fungi…
In the garage….in the sawdust by the saw-bench…
Fungi – luscious-looking – but I’m, once again, remembering Terry Pratchett’s observation that … 'All Fungi are edible. Some fungi are only edible once.’

Wild Service - Part Two….
Chapter Two – ‘The Architecture of Belonging’ can be summed up in this quote….
”….there is a common understanding among us all of what constitutes a good spot, the right place for a picnic, a good nook for a snooze.”
Places offer themselves to people for certain purposes.
The writer then sings the praises of rope-swings – and the observations he makes are simply – so.
Here are some rope-swings that we’re familiar with….

Mike can’t resist a rope-swing. I can - launching myself into thin air has never appealed to me.
Takes all sorts to make a world.
I’m not sure how interested folk would be in my giving a blow-by-blow account of my progress through ‘Wild Service’, and I think I’ve given a pretty good idea of the kind of book it is – so I’ll recommend reading it, and leave it here.
I previously mentioned the illustrations…...

As the reader works their way through the book the illustrations are encountered, one by one, in exactly the right place in the text - and they really are exceptional.

“Archaeology in action
Orkney’s excavation season begins this month, with three archaeological digs getting underway. A visit to the excavation sites, found across the islands, is an incredible way to uncover Orkney’s secrets. Don’t miss a trip to the Ness of Brodgar, with the dig there set to come to a close for good at the end of the summer. You can also visit the Iron Age site at the Cairns in South Ronaldsay, and the stunning Swandro site in Rousay, where it really is a case of archaeology on the edge.

New shopping experience at Scapa Distillery
Fresh from the opening of its fabulous Scapa Noust whisky tasting experience, the team at Scapa Distillery has unveiled the latest refurbishment project at the site on the outskirts of Kirkwall. The doors to the new-look shop officially opened last month, along with a tasting office where a number of Scapa whisky experiences can be enjoyed.

Bringing Orkney's past to life
Take a trip into Orkney’s fascinating history with a guided walk through St Magnus Cathedral’s graveyard from this summer. The new tours will tell the tales of colourful characters of the past, as well as showcasing some of the stories that have shaped generations of Orcadian history. The graveyard surrounding Kirkwall’s cathedral is a peaceful spot in the centre of town and it’s hoped the walks will help locals and visitors learn more about Orkney through the centuries.
