From ‘Free Tibet’…..

This should ring some bells for Scots, Irish and Welsh people….

“Have you ever heard of linguicide?

What is happening in Tibet right now isn’t just the death of a language, it is cultural murder.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is engaging in a campaign of linguistic erasure, reducing the Tibetan language to a secondary dialect in the place where it should be a mother tongue.

I want to learn more >>

In classrooms across Tibet, the CCP has mandated that Chinese should be the main medium of teaching for all subjects. Tibetan language classes are relegated to optional subjects, and in some schools are not offered at all.

When children return home from school, their parents report that they speak in Chinese and struggle to communicate with their own family in Tibetan.

Tibetan teachers have faced threats and even imprisonment.

Tibetan classrooms across the country are being closed under threat from authorities, including those offered by monasteries.

The CCP is also creating a hostile environment for the Tibetan language.

Road signs and legal documents are written in Chinese first, with Tibetan as an afterthought. Tibetan speakers who are not fluent in Chinese are prevented from getting well-paying jobs.

Tibetan refugees who have made it to Dharamsala have shared a terrifying picture of the state of the Tibetan language, describing how they and other parents are teaching their children Tibetan in secret and how children are held back at school if they have not made the grade in Chinese.

On the international stage, even the name “Tibet” is under threat.

World-leading researchers from Free Tibet and Tibet Watch are currently working on their next report, aiming to shine a spotlight on linguicide in Tibet.

This report will be the first of its kind on linguicide to combine testimonies from Tibetans with open-source policy research, all thanks to the incredibly dedicated team of researchers at Tibet Watch.

Right now, all we are asking is that you take a look at the linguicide campaign page on the Free Tibet website. This report is going to be the culmination of over a year of work, and by sharing the news you will be contributing to ensuring that this issue gets the attention it needs!
