Everybody Knows….

But many choose to ignore…..

I read Bartholomew’s poem, and it rang many bells with me.  Presently, ads. on the television for posh perfume for Christmas have been replaced by ads. for cruises - cruises in HUGE cruise liners – some to places where I think they shouldn’t even be allowed to go.  I‘ve rambled about this previously in m’blog of 1.1.’24….…

“Could Orkney Learn From Venice?...

Be Dammed

by Laia Jufresa
Translated by Sophie Hughes

“From down here it’s hard not to feel that walling themselves in was also, in part, a way to keep us out. We have it on good authority that they could have rescued us.”

The rising sea, one of the most alarming and ubiquitous effects of our warming planet, is threatening island and coastal communities all over the world. An ocean-modeling study published last week in Nature Climate Change asserted that the melting of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is now unavoidable, regardless of changes in greenhouse gas emissions in the coming century. This ice sheet alone holds enough water to raise the global sea level by as much as 5.3 meters if lost completely. As the oceans claim coastlines, the 900 million people who presently inhabit low-lying areas face relocation. How will those less directly affected respond?

This week’s short story by Mexican author Laia Jufresa, translated by Sophie Hughes, imagines a world ravaged and divided by the changing climate. Walled in by barricades crudely erected against the rising sea, a displaced community has formed a liminal, temporary settlement: thousands of boats linked together, queuing endlessly in hopes of crossing a border into safety. One woman, tasked with holding prayers for their salvation, negotiates the entanglement of faith and politics as she considers who, or what, truly has the power to change their circumstances.

Meanwhile - on the television there are repeated ads. for a Cruise to/through Antarctica.  This includes an image of a BIG liner, ploughing its way through water full of lumps of ice, past cliffs of ice and land covered in Penguins.
Presumably the people on these cruises don’t see the irony.
Worse still – maybe they don’t care.

I’m also reminded of Ben Elton’s novel…’Stark’ in which the rich and influential think they can escape from the destruction….

From ‘Free Tibet’…..

“There's a pivotal moment for Tibet's future in just a few weeks.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) does everything it can to conceal its human rights abuses in Tibet from the global spotlight. World governments have turned away as the CCP systematically eradicates Tibet's culture, religion, language, and even its name.

We need to make them speak out.

On 24 January, governments that have ignored the pleas of Tibetans will have an opportunity for redemption as China faces a review of its human rights record at the United Nations Human Rights Council. It's critical that they use this stage to confront China about the escalating human rights abuses in Tibet.

This is where you come in. Will you tell your foreign minister to raise Tibet at China's Universal Periodic Review?

The evidence of human rights abuses in Tibet is undeniable. Free Tibet has extensively documented forced disappearances, torture, and killings of Tibetans in custody. We've highlighted the distressing reality of almost one million Tibetan children coerced into colonial-style boarding schools for indoctrination. We've outlined the CCP's interference in Tibetan Buddhism, including its ambitions of hijacking the search for the next Dalai Lama. And we have called out the CCP's attempts to eliminate the name "Tibet" from the global stage as it enforces its own term, "Xizang".

The CCP wants the world to forget about Tibet as it erases its existence. We have to make these next two weeks count. Sign the petition and join the growing call for governments to confront China over its human rights abuses in Tibet.

Your action makes a difference: in the past month alone, we have seen political detainee Gonmo Kyi released and biotechnology giant Thermo Fisher cut sales of its equipment to police in Tibet. We can do it again.

Yes, I'll Sign the Petition >>

Thank you.
