Doves & Mazes…..The Difference Is Need…..Ways of Seeing…

Doves & Mazes…..

My lovely Niece-in-law posted on her Facebook page about lies and liars and the harm they can do.  This triggered memories for me which I looked at, worked with and, as is often the case, my line of thought culminated in a realisation of the fact that ……for any hurt there have been a thousand kindnesses and for every liar there are plenty of people who are true.

I was then thinking about Jackie Morris’ doves for Peace….

Jackie used to paint little gold mazes on stones and place them in the world around her.

She’s now painting little doves of Peace on stones and placing them in the world around her.

This morning, after my tussle with hurt-full memories, I thought that peace can be found/achieved by working your way through a maze of thoughts/memories/responses/decisions.

Peace, either for the world as represented by Jackie’s doves, or as an individual – peace of mind. Clarity of thought.

Doves & Mazes.

The Difference Is Need….

First light this morning, I heard ‘POP  POP  POP’ and thought – “People shooting -  in this weather?  Serves then right!”….

Co-incidentally, I’m re-reading ‘Skara – The First Wave’ by Andrew Appleby….

……and have just read of a goose hunt in which the hunters are so good at what they do that they kill cleanly nearly all of their prey. The dogs are trained to find and bring back any birds which are maimed, which are then also killed.

Possibly the difference between those hunters and todays shooters is…not only pride in making their own weapons and in their marksmanship, but also that the geese provided food, fat, feathers, bones  - played a large part in the lives of the people.

Whereas for today’s shooters the main aim appears to be some kind of entertainment/hobby/way to show off their shop-bought equipment.

No real need.

No real anything.

Ways of Seeing…

My - also lovely! - Great-niece posted this on her FB page…

Which led to the following exchange….

Me….

I don’t understand this…. I don’t see why one of these images is seen as being ‘wrong’ and the other as being OK? Not throwing shit at you Sharon! Just – seriously - I don’t understand what the message is.

I like the weird cow as a cheery sorta thing - the other one reminds me of art by someone I know who is a respected artist, who I respect as an artist…

https://www.facebook.com/vernon.bradley.397

….and who I see as being one of the most ‘alive’ people I’ve come across.

To me – those two art-works are just….different – different ways of being and seeing.

I don’t understand!

Reply.….

“As an early years educator there is a lot of pressure on children to preform to create what adults see as art.

It’s about letting the child lead the activity to create what they want to instead of only providing the materials that will create the art piece to the adults liking.

Basically, don’t just give children templates to work from, let them get messy and come up with their own creations.

If they tell you the piece on the left is a cow then a cow it is - no less worthy than the picture on the right.”

Me.....

"If they tell you the piece on the left is a cow then a cow it is - no less worthy than the picture on the right." Egggg-zactly.   Just ways of seeing.

And now, I get the message!

I will add - same goes for 'grown-up' art - it is what the person making it sees it as - who has a right to tell them otherwise? Kids will paint with mud - if mud is what’s available - so will some 'grown-ups'. You've sent me on an interesting line of thought!”

And I’ll leave my readers with that thought!
