Franklin Expedition Talk…

I usually go on about John Rae, but the lives of the Two Johns were fate-fully intertwined and so I’m posting information about a talk which is to be given by a descendent of John Franklin….

Continuing to weave the tales together might help to heal old hurts…

From ‘Wild Justice’….

“Books for schools: this is an opportunity for your favourite school to get some free books on nature and the environment. In 2020 & 2021, Wild Justice ran a project donating books to schools and libraries where 800 books were donated to 77 schools and 80 libraries from Shetland to the Isles of Scilly.

We’re doing it again, but this time would like you, our supporters, to nominate a secondary school for a bundle of books.

To nominate a school, simply reply to this newsletter with BOOKS as the title of the email and tell us the full postal address and weblink for your chosen secondary school. This offer is only open to our subscribed supporters - and we'll check!

We’ll contact schools you nominate and ask them whether they would like 0, 1 or 2 of each of these books:

We'll keep sending books until our budget for this project (books, postage, packing and logistical assistance) is exhausted - so get your nominations in quickly please. This is an investment in the future generation of naturalists and environmentalists.

Helping farmers to help the environment: a couple of petitions, set up by farmers.  Please have a look at them and see whether you feel you can support them:

  • an open letter to the big supermarkets by Riverford Organic's Guy Singh-Watson, we think this would help farming's sustainability - click here
  • demand better support for farming, a message to Therese Coffey from a Cumbrian farmer -  click here

That's it for now!

Thank you,

Wild Justice (Directors: Mark Avery, Chris Packham and Ruth Tingay).

Name That Fungi…..

Can someone tell me which kind of fungi this is? It's a whopper - growing at the base of a Rowan tree.  My thumb provides scale…..

I’m fascinated by fungi – but always bear in mind Terry Pratchett’s advice that….  ‘All Fungi are edible. Some fungi are only edible once.”….

Here’s one I made earlier…. https://theorkneynews.scot/2022/06/14/the-house-on-the-hill/
