 From ‘Free Tibet’……

“China is trying to wipe the name ‘Tibet’ off the map, and replace it with their own colonial name: ‘Xizang’.

In those spaces that China directly controls, Tibet is already going extinct - with the Chinese Communist Party United Front Work Department confirming that: “There is no more Tibet in the official documents of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs”.

The name ‘Tibet’ has centuries-old roots to Tibetan people, shaped by early trade and cultural exchange long before both Western and Chinese colonisation. Its exact origin is unclear, but the similarity to ‘Bod’, the Tibetan name for ‘Tibet’, suggests it evolved from local language, not foreign imposition.

In contrast, ‘Xizang’ is a far newer term, introduced during China’s Qing dynasty when Tibet was under pseudo-colonial control by China. While its origin may be vague, one thing is certain: ‘Xizang’ is Chinese, not Tibetan.

The past two years have marked a turning point in the CCP’s colonial strategy against Tibetans: from occupying Tibet to now erasing it from world memory.

In November 2023, the Chinese State Council released its 19th white paper on Tibet, but this one stood out for using ‘Xizang’ throughout, replacing any references to ‘Tibet’ with a term designed to redefine the region’s identity as Chinese.

Since then, Chinese official media has dramatically increased its use of ‘Xizang’. For example, China Daily’s use of the term ‘Xizang’ has exploded, from just 6 articles before the white paper, to 417 mentions since, a staggering 6850% increase. Meanwhile, mentions of ‘Tibet’ in the same outlet collapsed by 94% since the white paper.

Now, China wishes to erase ‘Tibet’ on an international level.

At the Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival, Chinese propaganda films were screened under the name ‘Xizang Panorama’, which saw widespread condemnation from Tibetan and Nepalese filmmakers and activists.

At the British Museum in London, exhibits on Tibet were followed by citations stating they were from “Tibet or Xizang Autonomous Region”, which was promptly changed after complaints from the Tibetan community.

In France, the Musée Guimet has been mired in controversy and legal challenges after exhibits on Tibet instead stated that they were from the “Himalayan World”, a phrasing that also seeks to diminish the name of Tibet.

Amidst this rising tide of cultural erasure, we see the need for action.

We want to equip institutions, journalists, academics, and legislators with the facts, tools and language to tell Tibet’s story truthfully, on Tibetans’ terms, not China’s. To protect Tibetan culture, language, and history, we must challenge China’s false narrative before it becomes the only story the world believes.

As we begin to take action and lay the groundwork for this campaign, we ask that you follow Free Tibet on social media, and check out our campaigns page for the latest news and updates.

We will not allow Tibet to be erased.
