Rhodochrosite pillow-stone fragment - translucent flint knife - such subtlety of colour....

Some views on the properties of Rhodochrosite - and I quote....

"Rhodochrosite regulates and stabilises the heart beat, balances blood pressure and stimulates circulation, the kidneys and reproductive organs. It alleviates migraines, skin disorders, thyroid imbalances, and intestinal problems. Rhodochrosite purifies the circulatory system and restores poor eyesight.

Known as the Stone of the Compassionate Heart, Rhodochrosite symbolizes selfless love, moving one beyond mere empathy but stirring one to action on others' behalf. Rhodochrosite, however, directs that love first toward the self for the specific purpose of emotional healing."

I wonder - how did the ancient people of The Ness view Rhodochrosite?

Not so colour-full, but v. significant find…..THE PLANK.

Only two days to go – what will they find???

Animals in the Room
Why We Can and Should Listen to Other Species

by Melanie Challenger

“Anyone who develops deep knowledge of other species by living alongside them for years realizes something both obvious and essential: we are not the only lives that matter.”

“It is a trick of hubris to imagine humans at the top of a hierarchy of life. As disciplines like botany, mycology, and zoology—known as the “humbling sciences”—illuminate the deep intelligence and complexity of nonhuman communication, humans are beginning to recognize that perhaps our voice is not the only one that matters, and that a myopic focus on our own rights and well-being at the expense of nonhuman others is ultimately harmful to the biosphere and to ourselves.

This week, writer and ethicist Melanie Challenger remembers listening and watching for the communicative habits of her nonhuman neighbors in the quiet of an English forest she once inhabited with her family. Through lenses both personal and philosophical, emotional and ethically rigorous, Melanie examines the staggering variety of nonhuman animal communication, from the subtle vocalizations of turtles to the flashing and freckling of Humboldt squids’ chromatophores, for whom color, not sound, is connection. How might our systems work differently, she asks, if they were adapted to receive input from the nonhuman creatures they involve and impact? What would it look like to let our animal kin communicate their interests on their own terms?
