Face Your Fear…..’The Stone Speaks’…..Look Up…..

by Bernie Bell - 07:45 on 31 October 2022

Fear…..

I was thinking about Bartholomew’s recent Fraiku… https://bartbarkerpoet.com/2022/10/28/fraiku-halloween/.  Superficially, it’s about being ‘spooked’ by a cat under the bed.  That’s often what being ‘spooked’ is about – a noise, something seen out of the corner of your eye.

It’s important to look – face your fear.  Sometimes/often what happened is explicable.  If it’s in-explicable – maybe just accept it as being ’one of those things’.

There are times when I think that ‘someone’ is trying to tell me something -  in which case I say to them that there’s no need for moving things about and hiding things – if they have something to say – say it!  Same as with incarnate people.

The main thing is to face our fears and not let fear smother our minds and reasoning faculties.

Though, of course, if you enjoy feeling fear - that’s your thing and who am I to say you nay!

‘The Stone Speaks’……

The Stromness Museum…. https://www.stromnessmuseum.org.uk/  are having a new exhibition called ‘The Stone Speaks – Fossils Creativity and Climate’ running from the 5th of November until the end of March 2023.  As ‘Friends of…’  we had an invitation to the preview, but won’t be going as I still avoid going indoors among unknown people – especially people in clusters.  We went to The Cairns exhibition…..  http://www.spanglefish.com/berniesblog/blog.asp?blogid=15972 as I so much wanted to see it and we managed to dodge the through-flow of people – that was a different matter to being in a cluster.

After all that pre-amble – I’m writing this because the title - and therefore what I can tell of what the exhibition might entail - set me thinking around the topic of stones and fossils and what they can tell us of the shaping of our world.

There are Stromatolites at Yesnaby….

And there are living Stromatolites in Australia… https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20210117-stromatolites-the-earths-oldest-living-lifeforms

There are places where it’s possible to get some grasp of how our world formed - for example at the Knockan Crag  geology trail. ….  https://theorkneynews.scot/2018/05/25/the-western-isles-or-there-and-back-again-ii/

There’s ripple-rock – once sand on a sea-bed or the bottom of a lake, now sometimes at the top of a waterfall…

https://theorkneynews.scot/2020/12/27/a-bit-of-an-expedition-to-birsay/

And there’s the word ‘Creativity’ in the title – the inspiration which can be prompted by seeing or being with the bones of the land…..which takes me to  ‘After Orcadia’ a recently published book by Rebecca Marr and Mark Edmonds – Rebecca being one of the folk whose art-work is part of the new exhibition.

This book includes images and words of and about stones and the shapes of and in stones which appeal to us humans…. ……. http://www.spanglefish.com/berniesblog/blog.asp?blogid=15888

And they do appeal to us – there’s the big concept of the world forming and changing and what that has left for us to read in the shapes and colours of rocks and crystals.  They also appeal to us for what they are and we like to bring them home and place them about us – and hold them.

I have a lump of rock which a friend gave me to hold onto when I was in a lot of pain  - it was given with kindness and good wishes – which I believe to still be there, with that piece of rock.

And…imagine being a Rock Shaman - really ‘living’ with the rocks…. https://theorkneynews.scot/2019/01/03/imagine-being-a-rock-shaman/

Also the word  ‘Climate’ - climate shapes geology.  Where we humans first chose to live was dictated by geology.

Hmmmmm I just might have to work out how to have another visit to the Museum to see this exhibition.

I just think this is a brilliant image…..
