The dangers of MMA in nail extensions
02 June 2008
Despite recent progress within the nails industry there is still no regulation denying ill-qualified technicians the freedom to operate nail extension businesses.
This has resulted in the standard of work throughout the nail industry remaining terribly inconsistent.
Salons and technicians operating with poor hygiene standards, insufficient training and using low grade products are termed Non Standard Salons.
The term low grade products includes the common usage of the deleterious chemical Methyl Methacrylate also referred to as MMA.

MMA when in it's liquid form is mixed with Acrylic powder and goes through a chemical process called polymerization. This particular product creates a very rigid nail enhancement which will cause excessive trauma to the natural nail when put under strain. Not only this, but  the poor adhesion properties of this product mean that in order to get the product to adhere, the natural nail must be etched heavily, and this within Non Standard Salons is commonly done with an electric file. Electric Files are not dangerous providing the technician has undergone the correct training, they should not however be used on the natural nail.

The emergence in the use of MMA here in the UK has resulted in the attraction of negative press as the damage caused to clients' nails has become apparent.

The fully qualified technicians offering a safe, hygenic service should now be highlighted to educate the consumers.
