OK the mystery has been solved thanks to BritishExpats forum.  Suggestions were very varied but the consensus is it is a 'Snowshoe Hare'.  I thought they were joking, imagining a hare with snowshoes on, but then Euan reminded me Nathan had been writing about snow shoe hares in his French project - they are the favourite food of the Canadian lynx - so where's the lynx???
