Safety Issues After Grenfell Tower Disaster

Without full knowledge of the exact circumstances of the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower, it is never the less becoming clear  that in addition to flammable cladding Grenfall Tower suffered from poor management and poor safety procedures. Profit before safety seems once again to have been the watchword.

According To Firstport Health & Safety is their number one priority(which may be true if you don't count their failings at Gibson Court, which resulted in a fatal fire and for which Firstport wre fined a record 460,000 pounds)

Residents should check with their property managers to see that they have reviewed any work where their is a risk that a fire compartment in a building may have been breached or damaged.

It should be noted that even something as trivial as fitting an aerial cable can compromise the integrity of a fire compartment.

Residents should insist that their property manager shows them the development fire risk assessments, including the date it was carried out and by whom and show what qualifications were held by the person conducting the assessment.

Since About Peverel know "fake" roof surveys have been carried out in the past, there is a real risk that fire risk assessments may have been aquestion of form filling without a proper inspection.

If any resident has the slightest concern ove any aspect of fire safety, they are encouraged to contact their local Fire Brigade, who will willingly come down and check the development out. If they find anything amiss (such as faulty fire doors or closers) they can order Firstport to bring them up to standard on the pain of prosecution.

Some Firstport developments are believed to have been fitted with similar cladding as to that fitted to Grenfall Tower. Firstport, to their credit are having these tested.

About Peverel would urge all residents to fit a smoke alarm in their apartments. Whilst not compulsory, they can be purchased for around a tenner (which is not a lot to pay for saving a life!)
