PITIFUL,FLAWED AND INACCURATE

This is the words used by the coroner at the Irene Cockerton inquest to describe the fire risk assesments carried out at Gibson Court.

These words aptly describe the manner in which the wider Peverel Group have always operated as residents know only too well.

Correctly the verdict was accidental death (since the fire was not started deliberately)

However, the culture of the operations that Peverel work by may well have contributed to the death of Irene Cockerton (though of course that cannot be proved.)

Typical of Peverel, proper checks were not carried out, no one within Peverel took any proper responsibility for making sure the right person was carrying out the checks and in a proper manner. Quick job, in, out no questions asked?

Even today when serious matters are brought to Peverel's attention, Peverel's response is to deny, evade, ignore and if that doesn't work to bully the person bringing the situation to Peverel's attention.

How many years did it take after Peverel were informed that a gate that acted as a fire exit was locked? The person who reported it was treated with contempt by Peverel management

What of the case of the person carrying out a fire safety inspection, who was using the name of a qualified inspector who was nearly 200 miles away at the time of the inspection?

What of the case of a Live in House Manager who gives a completely different address to the one she "claims" to be living at and appears to have a cosy individual relationship with her "pet" contractors?

Do Peverel take any notice of the resident bringing forward compelling evidence?

Of course they don't! They try to shut him up instead.

As you would expect we have a statement from Peverel, expressing regret, safety and welfare is our top priority, sympathy for the family and "We will not make any further comment".

Peverel your top priority was and remains working on  ever more inventive ways of screwing vulnerable people out of every last bit of cash they might have.

It may well be that shortly Mr Bill Everitt (National Technical Officer, Peverel Group) will retire.

Mr Everitt, every day of your retirement, think not of the meaningless praise for a job well done, valuable member, made a great contribution twaddle that Peverel will spin. Think instead of Irene Cockerton. Think instead if you had done your job properly or at least ensured it was done properly, you may not have had to give evidence at her inquest.

Mr Everiit, you may not be guilty in law, but you are guilty. Remember that for the rest of your days.
