PREFACE.
As I have during the past few years devoted a good deal of spare time to the study of Powell Genealogies (with special reference to the East Anglian representatives of the Name), it has been suggested to me by several members of my own family that I should print a short genealogical history of the branch to which we belong. Believing that it might be advisable whilst time and opportunity offered to put on record, without waiting for further research, the results of my investigations on the subject, I have set them forth, together with short pedigrees of the families of Baden, Thistlethwayte, and Clark, in the following volume, which will, I hope, be of sufficient interest to excuse its imperfections. I have added, in the form of an Appendix, a list of the earlier East Anglian Wills of the name, with abstracts of some of them; also of the documents in which the name occurs among the Feet of Fines for Suffolk; also an extract from a Suffolk Subsidy Roll. Notes explaining some obsolete words, &c., will be found at the end of the book.
With regard to the plan of the work, I have thought it best to set forth the history of the family, as far as possible, by means of a large folding Chart Pedigree, having adopted this form as being the clearest.
In order, however, to avoid making this chart of too unwieldy dimensions, it has been found necessary to continue the pedigrees of some of the branches by means of tabular and narrative pedigrees, in the text. Where this has been done, references are given on the chart to the pages where such continuations will be found.
With the Chart Pedigree before him, the reader will find pp. I-23 act more or less as a running commentary, the various evidences, etc., being given later on.
Following p. 41 will be found ten blank pages for the entry of genealogical memoranda and continuations of the pedigree, which I hope will be found useful.
It must be borne in mind that the dates, previous to 1753, are given in the old style, in which the year began on the 25th of March.
I have to record my especial thanks to Sir Edward Bunbury, Bart, for his kindness in allowing me access to the Court Rolls of Mildenhall; also to Mr. Gery Milner-Gibson Cullum, of Hardwick House, and to Mr. O. F. Read, of Mildenhall, for similar favours.
