We offer the following bits of advice on applying for Tir Gofal to new applicants who are intending to apply in the next application round.

Get your application in early and make sure all sections of the application form are complete.

The applications are competitive so you will need to achieve a certain level of points to get in.  Details of the points requirements are not available at the moment and the level might be set quite high if there appears to be a lot of applicants. 

A crucial aspect of your application is the proportion of habitat land.  Much depends on the assessment of its quality as species rich grassland.  This is something botanists find difficulty doing in the winter. 

Streamside corridors, arable options etc can make a difference to your points.

Some are the common pitfalls are fairly easy to avoid they include:-

• Having nowhere to feed sheep or other livestock on enclosures that are habitat land.
• Committing to laying hedges on the margins of habitat land where none of the brash can be burnt.
