FREIGHT TRAFFIC

Freight traffic on the S&D falls into four main catagories.

  • Coal
  • Intermodal container
  • bulk grain
  • general merchandise

Coal is moved by unit train. Most of the cars are 3 bay hoppers and are permanently coupled by draw bars into rakes of fours and sevens rakes are coupled with kadee 820 buckeyes.

SD 45  5333 leads two more '45s on a coal train north on the main line.

Containers are carried two high in well cars. The cars are again coupled in semi permanent rakes. There are single cars and five unit articulated cars. The articulated cars are shorter overall as there are only six trucks between the five units. Even so a single set is just over ten feet between couplers.

This intermodal train is just leaving kintaline yard east bound with a pair of Dash 9 s in charge. Road trailers on flat cars were often included in the consist. The yellow car is a plain 50 foot flat car. The next is an articulated car.

Grain traffic is handled by covered hoppers. most are 3 or 4 bay cars. There is one PS 4750 centre sill car

The centre sill car still in builders primer.

Finally general merchandise. Carried in a variety of box cars, all are fifty footers and use either kadee 820 or 920 series couplers. many of the older ones still have roof walks which are not correct  but wil be removed as vehicles are shopped for maitainence.
