Elm seeds
by Chris Conniff - 20:43 on 30 June 2006
For several days the garden has been carpeted with the light oval seeds of the Wych Elm. I do not remember this happening in any other year; they have been falling like rain, covering everything, getting into the house through open windows, somehow managing to get inside the car.It took me a while to work out what is going on. The prevailing wind here is from the West, but this week it has been blowing from the East. Even so, there are more elm seeds than I have ever seen before. The Scots Pine is also throwing down a lot of cones, which we have been gathering to use as kindling in the wood burning stove next winter, of course.
Meanwhile, the Iris sibirica have been making a good display. I must try to take the camera round the garden and take some photos! As usual, the cobbler's children go barefoot.....
