Riverside restaurant garden, Abbey St Bathans

Summer breeze

by Chris Conniff - 16:48 on 14 June 2006
The weather has been very jumpy indeed. Cold, cold, cold, then wet, then hot, and now windy. Amazingly, plants somehow cope and survive. The sensible gardener uses shelter belts, keeps the soil in good heart, tries mulching before the dry weather comes, and thinks carefully before planting, choosing the right plant for the right situation. The impulsive gardener - me - buys plants for all the wrong reasons and then tries to make the best of the situation. Plants want to grow, though, and will do their best to survive given half a chance. The damp border is a place where candelabra primulas and iris sibirica flourish. Camassias are good and astilbes follow later. It is a constant source of joy. Garden visits in Scotland are a good source of interesting, reliable, healthy plants - especially the primula species, of which I bought several on a visit to Glenarn, Rhu, last week - forgot to take the camera, but at least that gives me a good excuse to go back. Glorious Himalayan style gardens well worth visiting if you are anywhere near Helensburgh.
