Iron Will prevails as Billbo baggins another
17 October 2006
Iron Will prevails as Billbo baggins another Saturday 14th October Old Habs 5 - 1 Old Etonians II (Reidy 3, Richardson, Paterson) Orson Welles once stated that 'the battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton'. A little hard to believe on the showing of the school's more recent crop. Wellington would doubtless have had a thing or two to say about the defensive formation that allowed OH to carve open chance after chance on the battlefelds of North London last Saturday. Yet all appeared well for the visitors when they rifled home an early lead. Jameson, clearly still affected by his involvement in a vicious karaoke bar brawl the previous night (all stemming from his insistence that 'Flying Without Wings' was HIS song), was forced yet again to bellow out the rallying cry. Like the Knights of the Round Table, the OH heroes answered the call and, in the form of Will 'Sir Lancelot' Reidy, struck two incisive blows to keep their Arthurian League Division 2 hopes alive. Yet, taking a 2-1 lead in at half-time, spirits should have been high, and it is a sign of the recent anxiety amongst the team that their confidence seemed tentative. Jameson had to take control. Wise words and a firm hand soon brought some of that famed OH determination to the fore once more. The second half began with a breath-taking OH move and, although Vellosa's shot fizzed the wrong side of the post, it was an ominous sign for the tiring Etonians. What followed was not far short of an onslaught. Sharp, penetrating passing - arguably the best football seen at the Crox this season - inevitably led to a further flurry of goals. It was no surprise to see Reidy net once more, nor heart-throb Rico to make the score sheet; but it was perhaps the final goal which most emphatically highlighted OH's dominance, with Bill 'Martin Peters' Paterson smashing home his second of the season (on the rebound) to round off an impressive display. A quick glance at the record books should ensure that confidence from beating Eton IIs does not turn into arrogance when facing Eton IIIs this saturday: in a not so cunning piece of gamesmanship, it appears that the IIIs are a more potent force than the IIs. Credit to this sharp-eyed reporter for spotting that one. No flies on me. What the keymen said: Richardson: "You could literally see the confidence flowing back into the side. It was beautiful! As for the header... it was easy! A flowing move found the youngster William Reidy free down the right. I peeled off at the back stick ready and hungry for a goal. Will floated an inch perfect cross in to my path, with the full back watching on in anquish as I soared high to head the ball firmly back across goal into the bottom right corner of the net. A great day and one the junior firm would have been sorry to miss." Paterson: "I was on the bench on Saturday, as I turned up late after working till 7.30am. I came on at half time for a spot of left back action, and defended so badly there for 20 minutes that I convinced Steve I should go up front! Soon got on the score sheet - on a plate from Reidy Junior, then returned the compliment for his hat-trick... Rico and your bro look like they've got a good partnership in the making - i'm just trying to give The Gaffer a selection dilemma!" Will Reidy: "Glenn Little informed me before the match that as I missed the game the week before I should have been on the bench, but due to others being late I was getting the green light. At 7"5 the Gaffer is an imposing figure, but he showed faith in me and I hope I repaid that. The service was disgustingly good, particularly Rico's endless flick-ons, Keeno's majestic runs, and with Russ demonising them down the left. Keeno's cross for my 2nd was worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize alone, as it laid to rest a running feud the media had picked up upon which had lasted since a failed one-two on the opening day of the season. We just wana get our 'eads down in training this week and work hard to pick up the results and forget about the media's likening of me and Keen's rift to the war zone on the West Bank. At the end of the day it's not about my goals, it's about the team. All I wana do is work hard and hopefully be involved in Glenn Little's plans for the next match, although I will be un-contactable until then as I am hitting my room for another 7 days in isolation." Jones: "Wicked result on Saturday. At times I reckon we played the best football I've seen from an Old Habs side. Some quality moves. Not overly happy that Will Reidy seems to be modelling himself on David Platt though. His first goal was a volley over his shoulder reminiscent of that goal against Belgium, and when he completed his hat-trick he ran into the goal to retrieve the ball. Surely no need with the score at 4-1. I´m also disgusted with his attitude - it was a close vote for MOM between him and Shuey and I asked him afterwards if he'd have been gutted if he didn't get it. His response was, 'If I didn't get it I would have had to reconsider my position at the club.' Keeno also issued a massive broadside at him when he put the ball perfectly on his head for the second. Apparently Keen refused to celebrate with him in protest of W Reidy's previous comments. Anyway, wicked game all round." Paterson: On Russ Jones' shameless campaign for an assist on the opening day of the season - "stop scratching around for assists and start putting some quality through balls in like i did for Will's hat-trick on saturday!"
