'Rasol folks' as wayward strikes spell heartbreak at Croxdale
05 October 2006
'Rasol folks' as wayward strikes spell heartbreak at Croxdale Saturday 30th September Old Habs 0-1 Old Westminsters' Unable to reach the dizzying heights that marked their opening game, OH struggled to find their feet in this scrappy encounter at the Croxdale stadium. On arrival, it appeared that word of the team's improvement had spread across South-West Hertfordshire - a buzz of excitement surrounded the club-house and even the players couldn't find a place to park their Porsches. Spirits were only dampened slightly on the realisation that the frenzied activity centered on our comrades, the OH rugby team. Selection dilemmas plagued Jameson once more (the writer understands that the skipper had been up until 5:30 in the morning toying with possible line-ups). In the event, it was old-timer Paterson and new boys Robin and James who were left disappointed, though the former's misery was soon transformed into joyful enthusiasm at the prospect of refereeing the first-half. And it was, in truth, a fairly tame affair to oversee. Weakness in the tackle and a universally poor first touch left OH fighting to come to terms with the ten men of Westminster. Frustration grew as nobody seemed able to get a shot on target despite dominating the possession. However, ten minutes before half-time, promising new signing John Glenn showed the rest of the side where the net was, nonchalantly chipping the ball over the desperately unfortunate Shuey to give Westminster a fortunate 1-0 lead. Half-time again saw three changes with the skipper determined to give everybody a fair chance early in the season. And the substitutes didn't disappoint: Paterson linked up well with Reidy in attack, James Kilsby was dogged at the back and Robin was a calming influence in midfield. However, continued dominance failed to bear fruit as a series of half-chances went begging. The ball fizzed across Westminster's box on a number of occasions, with Will 'The Receder' Reidy unlucky not to get off the mark. Word has it he plans to lock himself in his room for seven days of mental preparation ahead of next Saturday's fixture. In contrast, Richardson, Keenlyside and the Smudge have been spotted engaging in early morning training in Hyde Park for the last two mornings in a bid to improve fitness levels. Such commitment to the cause cannot fail to produce a return to form in the weeks ahead. Particular mention should be made to Rasol who was not only a deserving man of the match, but who also brought new faces to join the OH Firm and help create the famed Croxdale Road atmosphere. The posh boys from Charterhouse are surely in for one hell of a beating at the hands of the people's champions this coming Saturday. Thanks to PC Paters and Big Dave Hart for refereeing. What the keymen said: Reidy: "I still can't believe we lost, I'm going to do some shooting practice this week as I was not good enough! I'm absolutely gutted about it, I'm definitely gonna score next week, bit of a Kezman so far!! Thought we were well unlucky, 'The Eagle' Keenlyside did his best flying down the wings, but he seemingly hasn't forgiven Will Reidy for not returning his one-two last week as he didn't put a ball onto my head all day!!! Steve's Glenn Little looka-like is unbelievable!” Jones: "I was gutted too. We probably did have 70% of the possession but I don't think we would have scored if we played another 90 minutes. I think I literally touched the ball about 5 times. Saying that when I did touch it I did absolutely nothing with it.” Yalaqi: "We started slow and didn't take our chances. I think we were under the impression that it would be an easy win as they only had 10 men to start with. Once they had a full team the task became more difficult. I'm especially disappointed that we lost to a team that wore pink shirts."
