If Miss Gertrude King had a little more lightness of touch, she would rank amongst those pianists who, if not taking a place in the front rank, are still capable of many performances that have the quality of interest. Miss King, however ,is unfortunately prone to be somewhat heavy handed, and this trait detracts from her renderings of such pieces as Chopin’s Preludes, Nocturnes, and Scherzos. There was a very good afternoon attendance at her recital given on Friday afternoon at the Bechstein Hall, and the programme provided on that occasion was not without attractive properties. Miss King herself was heard to best advantage in the Intermezzo and Ballade, by Brahms numbered as Op .118 , and in the fine “ Team E Variations”, by Tschaikowsky, in both of which she gave evidence of executive powers of some brilliance.
