New Life for Old Smiddy

DURING the first week in May, and for the first time since the early 70s, the Old Smiddy in Blair Atholl relit its forge. “It’s been a long journey, in more ways than one,” said artist blacksmith James Adams, the new proprietor.
James (pictured below) moved up from London a year ago, having acquired the old smiddy building in dilapidated condition. He has converted half of it into a cottage for himself, whilst retaining the original forge area as an open workshop. Visitors can see completed works in a new gallery area, while viewing work in progress through a window onto the workshop itself.
Technique is all-important in James’s sculptures. He described his subject matter to Comment as ‘simple and iconic - the work is figurative, but the emphasis is on the workmanship, and it highlights traditional methods of working and joining metal - punching, riveting, chiselling.’
However, he admits to using a modern gas forge that he has installed alongside the old stone forge - “we couldn’t get the old one to stop smoking” - he explained.

After 10 years running his own company from a workshop under a railway arch in London, James is relishing the wide open spaces and comparative artistic freedom of the highlands. “The community has been very supportive and interested in my work, and it’s a good feeling to be reviving an ancient trade at the centre of village life,” he remarked.
In addition to his contemporary sculpture, the gallery also shows a selection of James’ paintings, wrought iron candlesticks and curtain rails. Work by other local artists is featured on an occasional basis. James also accepts commissions for sculpture or functional installations in metal.
Passers-by are welcomed to his gallery, but he prefers a phone call or email to ensure an appointment at: the Old Smiddy, The Square, Blair Atholl, PH18 5SG 01796 481 546
