MATCH REPORTS

V NEW ELGIN 11TH APRIL 2009

by Mike Pollard - Co-manager - 22:00 on 12 April 2009

Scotscoup Division 2

City’s dream start to the junior ranks is now hanging by a thread after being defeated by league leaders New Elgin. With New Elgin only needing one more win in their last two games it looks as though City will have to settle for second place.

Pollard said “We are all bitterly disappointed with the result but on the day the best team won. With this top of the table clash the one true winner was Junior football. There is still a lot to play for in our last three games as every one knows football a funny old game and any thing can still happen. But to be realistic it does look like Elgin will take the league.”

Pollard also added “We have a semi final against Deveronside and this means we will have to pick ourselves up and get on with the job in hand.”

This tense encounter started at a furious pace but it was City who where looking more in command. With only 2 minutes played City were awarded a free kick on the edge of the New Elgin box. Turner swung the ball in to the near post only to see a New Elgin defender slice the ball in to his own net.

This game was a hard fought occasion with both sides with so much to lose and with a tension you could feel all round the park.

On the 40th minute City gave away a free kick near their own box. City seemed to fall asleep and this became costly when the Elgin forward latched on to the cross while City just stood and watched. Elgin made no mistake and gave Young in goals no chance, to level the score just before the break.

With everything tied both sides had every thing to play for. For the second time in the game City’s defence fell asleep and a long ball through was quickly put in to City’s net to give the team from Elgin the lead on the 46th minute.

Only 10 minutes had past in the second half and City conceived a penalty which Elgin happily took advantage of this to put Elgin 3-1 up.

City where looking to find a way back in to this game but even though they pounded the Elgin side they just couldn’t seem to find the back of Elgin’s net. Even with a missed penalty from City, Elgin held on to take the game and by look of things the title as well.
