Lady Massie Blomfield

Author of Essay No. 26.

The Imperial War Musuem has a Page about her, and also provided this :-

There is a photograph WWC D9-25 of her in IWM's collection.
She is Lady Rosamund Selina Massie Blomfield. She was born Rosamund Selina Graves and married Rear Admiral Sir Richard Massie Blomfield KCMG. They had two sons. The eldest, Charles George, born in 1879, was killed in the First World War on 9 June 1915. His younger brother, Hugh, was born in 1881 and died in Kenya in 1968.

The photograph is part of a collection of portrait photographs of women who undertook war related work during the First World War. The Royal Red Cross (RRC) was first instituted in April 1883:

"To confer the decoration upon any ladies, whether subjects or foreign persons who may be recommended to Our notice by Our Secretary of State for War for special exertions in providing for the nursing, or for attending to, sick and wounded soldiers and sailors ... (and) for special competency which they may have displayed in their nursing duties with Our Army in the Field, or in Our Naval and Military Hospitals."

There is more detail here. This article also explains that the Registers of Recipients of the Royal Red Cross is held in the UK National Archives under the catalogue reference WO 145/1. It would appear, however, that the register has not been digitised so can only be consulted onsite at Kew. I see that the Register is also searchable and available via Find My Past, but I don’t have access to a subscription to this site.
The uniform Lady Rosamund is wearing is that of a Girl Guides leader. Information on the role of the GGs in the First World War is here
