Annual Fun Day 2011
18 September 2011

The BHC of Scotland held their Fun Day on Sunday 18th September 2011 and had a really good turnout.  Lots of new faces, which was very nice to see, and a few oldies as well.  A number of prospective owners were taking in all the pros and cons of owning a basset - mainly pros, not so many cons, in their opinion.

As usual, the Bassets all seemed to be on their best behaviour - and we all know what that means!  Margaret Gillespie was our Judge for the day.  Margaret has bred and shown gundogs in the past, has had some lovely show bassets that won many top awards, and now has two pet pugs.

It was lovely to see Hannah Johnman still going strong and in good voice at 14+.  She told the youngsters off a few times if they got a bit too cheeky.  What was disappointing was the lack of children taking an interest.  Usually we have so many children taking part that we run out of rosettes.  Last year we had six, this year only four turned up.   One of them, only seven months old, still managed to win a special rosette with his toy Basset called Walker.

Plenty of food for afternoon tea and a good old chat.  The best supported class of all, the sausage catching competition ended up with two hounds being first equal.  The Bassets had obviously been in training all year for this and were so "fit for sausage catching purposes" that we ran out of sausages!   One hound, Captain Bertie, has his own Facebook page with a huge worldwide following.

We had Microchipping for anyone who wanted to take advantage of a special reduction in price on the day, a number of people filled in Health Surveys and we managed to raise some funds for Basset Hound Health.

On the whole, it was a very successful event and everyone went home with a rosette and a smile - which is what it is all about.
