First World War

1914 - 1918

 

The family lost fifteen members killed in action, one killed while a priosoner, and one was invalided out with "shell-shock".

 

But the family also played its part, both out of the front line, and on the Home Front:-

1914

Aug. 4      War declared.

Oct.        Harold son of Hubert Powell killed in action.

Nov.        Eustace Crawley son of George Crawley killed in action                  Ypres.

 

1915

March       Liewellyn Jones Bateman killed in action.

May 2       Robert Selwyn Pryor son of Selwyn killed in action.

May 9       Townsend son of Rev. Townsend Powell killed in action.

May 9       Richard Henry Powell (H.P.P.) killed in action

            Richebourg 'Avoue.

Aug 7       Walter Lloyd husband of Phyllis Powell killed in action.

            Gareth Powell son of Wilfred killed in action.          

 

1916

Jan        Walter Lloyd, husband of Phyllis dau: of Frank killed

           at Suvia Bay.

August 13   Charles Baden Powell son of Charles W. Powell killed in                action "Somme front".

Sept 15 1917  John Mackreth son of Madeline (Powell) Mackreth -

             killed in action.

           Vincent Mackreth invalided shell shock.

June 1     Richard son of Henry P.Powell killed in action.

Dec.  21    James Riddle Bucknill son of George drowned in action.

 

1917

           Herbert Baker D.S.C. awarded Commander O.B.E.(civil Div)               for Army_& Navy.   Consulting Chemical Expert during the War

July        Joyce Powell resigns her work at Holloway & starts work at              the food control Dept.

July 15     Thomas Clark son of Edward C.Powell killed in action at

              Poperinghe "Hill 60"

July 28     Gerald son of Charles Watson Powell killed in action.

 

1918

March 21    Edward Ingram Powell son of Edward C.Powell prisoner -killed.

Nov 11      Armistice after Great War.


They grow not old, as we that are left grow old.

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn

At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,

We will remember them.
