Pie In The Sky

Pie In The Sky was a very low budget affair set in Universal Pies, a pie shaped bakehouse (aka Piehouse) run by Pieman and Piewife. In every episode they recieve a live video message (two decades before Skype remember!), on a small spherical screen on a stick, from Piepilot (a spaceman from the planet Pi who wears a pie shaped helmet) requesting that they bake him a pie with a special ingredient in it.... a song! The songpie is for the children of pie who apparently have no songs of their own. Pieman cycles (or carries whatever remains of his bike in one or two episodes) up the hill to collect a pie dish beamed down to him by PiePilot, before heading back to Piehouse, whereupon they decide which piesong(s) to use in that weeks songpie, and which shaped-cutter would be best suited to the theme. We then see the same main actors playing different roles, performing the selected song(s) before returing to Pieman and Piewife in time to see the finished pie have it's song added to it (by way of a advanced (for the time) digital effect that causes a high speed version of the song performance to heard and to be seen in a trianglular part of the screen, being sucked through the crow shape pie vent into the pie). Once this is done the pie is taken back up the hill and Piepilot beams it up, and sings a bar or two of that weeks song himself (usually in garbled form) as the credits begin to roll. 13 Episodes were made and first shown in 1986, then the whole series (more or less) was wheeled out another 7 times between 1987 and 1991, before dissappearing from the schedules, and possibly the archives. Thankfully most of the episodes can now be found on youtube for those of you who want to see a slice of televisual pie from the days before it became virtually illegal to make pies (and other unhealthy foods) seem appealing to children. One wonders what a 2010s remake might look like, and suspects that it would now have to centre around a food stuff that was not just healthy, but also vegetarian and ethnic.... but Vegetable Biryiani In The Sky just wouldn't have the same charm about it, would it?
