First Aiders

First Aiders  - legal position

There have been articles in the media about First Aiders liability recently; might put you off signing up / helping. No need!  Here is a summary for any First Aider who helps out at a SERC ride.

Fortunately it is difficult to sue a first aider in the UK and Scotland, but not impossible, unlike in Europe and USA. It is very unlikely to happen and even more unlikely to succeed. Scottish law is more on your side; has a strong common sense prevailing history!

Some folk take out insurance if they do it alot because of defense costs, not liability. e.g. mountain rescue first aiders called out a lot.

Health and Safety Executive - "It is very unlikely that any action would be taken against a first-aider who was using the first-aid training they have received. HSE cannot give any specific advice on this issue as it does not fall within HSE's statutory powers." HSE FAQs about first aid and aiders >>

The Resuscitation Council (UK) - useful document >> Long, comprehensive and interesting if you want to get the full picture. But might put you off!

Warning - insurance companies will give advice, but they tend not to be impartial by omission and use 'what if' scary stories - remember they are after the premium!
