Dear Film Club Chums, it's been a long time coming but it's here at last! The programme for 2017/18, a nice eclectic mix of the new and the not so new. As ever, upstairs at The County Hotel doors open 7.00pm film starts at 7.30. See ya there!
November 17th HIDDEN FIGURES (2016) USA Theodore Melfi Drama/History 137mins PG Three maths geniuses are recruited to save NASA's manned orbit programme. The issue? It's 1962, they're all women. Oh, and they're all African-American.
December 8th THE BIG LEBOWSKI (1998) USA Joel & Ethan Coen Comedy/Crime 117mins 18 Jeff Bridges’ fabulously funny 1998 take on the 'Chandleresque'. Bridges plays the so laid back he's almost horizontal eponymous hero with great support from John Goodman and Steve Buscemi
January 12th SWISS ARMY MAN (2016) USA/Sweden Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert Adventure/Comedy 97mins 15 Pushing the limits of humour and fun and absurd situationist film-making Daniel Radcliffe plays a corpse washed up on a beach on a desert island giving castaway Paul Dano hope that he might escape his plight as the two become firm buddies.
February 9th THE RED TURTLE (2016) France/Belgium/Japan Michael Dudok de Wit Animation/Fantasy 80mins PG Another castaway film - this one an outstanding French/Belgian/Japanese animation lush and teeming with life.
March 16th PAPER MOON (1973) USA Peter Bogdanovic Comedy/Crime/Drama 102mins PG In 1973 Peter Bogdanovic made this stunning film, recently re-mastered and re-released, starring Ryan O'Neal and his 9 year old daughter Tatum. He's a con man relying on his wits, she might be his daughter, forced by circumstance to rely on each other. Influential and unsentimental and with a great supporting cast.
