Welcome to the Highland German Society

in Inverness

Our aim is to promote an interest in the culture and traditions of the German speaking countries, and, through wider knowledge, foster understanding and relations between people living in the Highlands and those living in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and other German-speaking territories.
The Society, which was established in 1993, includes members who often holiday, or have lived and worked in a German speaking country, and also native German speakers, who have settled in or around Inverness.
We enjoy musical performances and talks on a very wide variety of subjects; for example the German Consul General from Edinburgh, The Minister of the German Congregation in Edinburgh and the director of the Goethe Institute in Glasgow have given presentations to our society. In a lighter vein, language games and other activities afford a chance of getting to know each other better. A traditional highlight is the “Weihnachtsfeier” (Christmas celebrations) in December.
After long and frequent discussions it has been decided that the official programme, i.e. the talks and presentations will be delivered in English, so that all can understand and enjoy them. For those keen to practise their German language skills, there is an opportunity to do so over a cup of tea/coffee in an informal setting, at the end of the official programme.
If you would like to know more, please contact the Secretary of the Society, Richard Baxter on 07711548971 or at richbax52@yahoo.com.
