Presentation skills, 16 March 2009
18 March 2009

We make a presentation even when we talk  for one minute . Whether we talk to one person or to 500 persons we sell ideas.  We remember great and horrible speakers and forget average speakers.

Ed delivered an outstanding presentation that we will remember. We learned that beside content we have to care about three other components: State management, Rapport with audience and Energy.  He told us that the impact of words is only 7% while body language has an impact of 55% and tonality has an impact of 38%. Ed has shown to us two videos: a silent one (winner of slideshare.net) and one about with piano as background sound. No word but perfect.

I personally will remember this discussion with Ed about cars. He has done it to illustrate the effect of bringing  a discussion to a higher abstract level to generate rapport:
- Which car do you drive?
- A Renault, I answered
- A renault?...... I drive a MERCEDES!

Now the same car discussion but starting at higher abstracts level:
- is transportation important to you?
- Yes
- What car do you use for this?
-  A Renault.
- I use a Mercedes.

In the first discussion I felt that something was wrong with my car type. In the second I felt that something was wrong with his car type. The second discussion generated a good rapport to continue, the first did not. The attendance found that Rapport is worth the next workshop with exercises.  We agreed to meet on 11 May for this.

Present: 10 students, 3 kiwanis, 2 diwanis, Philips marketing manager
