Half Year Report from the Chairman

Dear Club Member

As we reach the half year point in the current year, we thought that we would keep you up to date on the situation at Bro Myrddin Bowls Club.

Prior to the Covid outbreak the club was progressing steadily every year. However, with the outbreak of Covid, everything changed. Overnight we went from a thriving club to closure. There was nothing that we could do other than carry on as best we could.

Year 2021/2022 saw some resemblance of normality being restored although not with a true picture of what the future held. We knew that we had new members who would leave once their own clubs reopened. That together with the uncertainty of another Covid outbreak left us feeling vulnerable.

However, come the start of year 2022/2023 we saw some members returning to their old clubs but also saw us have a large return of members that we had not seen for a while. We also retained a number of new members who enjoyed the atmosphere of the club.

Obviously, the atmosphere is created by you the members and it is very satisfying to hear people talking about the friendliness of the club.

Since the beginning of this year we have seen a steady return to normality, room hire and buffets are creating an extra income which is much needed. County short mat involvement is now back to normal, and they can be guaranteed to fill the stadium every time they play. We now have our own short mat team which is doing very well in the Carmarthenshire League, and this is another plus for the club.

Our winter leagues have again been very successful with a large number of members taking part. All in all, a very positive start to the year.

We appreciate that you have had to tolerate a less than adequate heating system this winter and we thank you for your patience.

However, the good news is that the council have decided to replace the old system with the latest renewable energy technology, system. This will probably mean an end to our reliance on gas.

Costs have soared this year but with the condensing of playing hours and opening hours we are confident that we can cope with the ongoing costs for the foreseeable future.

Needless to say, that none of this would have been possible without the help of our very underrated volunteers, a huge thank you to you all.

The new outside green will shortly be in use again and we already have bookings from various touring teams, and this year we will be involved in outside leagues.

Whilst we continue to improve our facilities, the next major expenditure will be the replacement of the indoor carpet. This has been looked at by the suppliers and they estimate another two years life before replacement.

Rest assured that the Trustee’s will continue to work on your behalf to ensure the effectiveness and profitably of the club.

Whilst not wishing to name individuals I must express my sincere thanks to the Treasurer who has excelled with his costings and ensured the profitability of the club.

Thank you all, for your participation and help in the smooth running of Bro Myrddin Bowls Club.

Yours faithfully

Colonel Dennis A Barker CBE OBE DCM
