A headstrong woman who’s trying to get to an island, is prevented from doing so and on her holdover meets a dashing Laird…The glories of Mull, Wendy Hiller’s clipped brilliance, Powell and Pressburger’s smoke and mirrors mysticism, Petula Clark as a little girl, Erwin Hillier’s expressionist photography, the intensity of the ceilidh, haunting music, “that’ll be the seals singing”.  No wonder people fall in love with IKWIG, its openness and caprice.

Boswell and Johnson’s Tour of the Western Isles

It takes guts to film a classic book like this one.  John Byrne showed he had them.  He turns James Boswell’s Hebridean memoir into a movie that is wildly Wellesian.  Robbie Coltrane and John Sessions burst out of the screen.  A rarely shown, ridiculously undervalued classic, introduced by the director himself!

Plus three films by Nairn resident David Ness: Where Love Reigns (16 min) demo scenes for a feature on the love affair between psychoanalyst Carl Jung and his patient Sabina Spielrein, shot by the legendary Jack Cardiff; Angel of Time (10 min) a surreal visual metaphor inspired by Walter Benjamin's allegory of the Angel of History; and Certain Knowledge (3 min) - darkly haunting visuals, cut-up expressionist poetics, essentially an enigmatic reflection on the limits of our perceptions.
